One of the memories - taking Muriel the goat to Bruny Island for Christmas

I have been forced to endure some serious couch time after contracting whooping cough (I didn’t know grown ups could catch it…hmmnnn). To keep myself from dropping into a muddle of self-pity I’ve kept busy doing a job I’ve meant to do for ages… to collate my blog posts from ‘The Challenge’ -the name we gave to the summer adventure we decided to have in our own backyard. Our goals at the time were:

  • Aim to be self sufficient for meat, fruit, and vegetables
  • Anything we can’t grow ourselves we can barter or purchase (using any funds gained from selling our surplus produce) from only Tasmanian Growers/Producers (preferably organic and/or sustainably grown)
  • Exceptions – fair trade cocoa (Johan can’t survive without this apparently 🙂 and sugar for Johan’s Hot Chocolate & 100% recycled toilet paper (because we’re soft!).
  • No supermarket shopping
  • No purchases of new items such as clothing, household stuff etc.
  • Reduce our energy consumption to ‘grid neutral’ – we have recently installed solar hot water, and will have grid-connected solar electricity installed before the challenge commences

I wonder why I smiled every time I went in the garden?

Most of the posts can be found here, in order, from the planning phase to actually doing it.

As well as adding them to this site I’ve created a PDF document (I really do have way too much time on my hands) which I can print out and put into our photo album so we can remember the details and experiences of that fascinating summer.
