Are you OK in there?

R2-D2 has come to the end of it’s 21 day cycle – and the tally of healthy, freshly hatched chicks warming in the brooder is good. Of the 24 eggs I put in 23 were fertile. 17 hatched of these hatched – meaning a 73% hatch rate, which I’m very happy about as it was my first go with this incubator. Also, I’ve been told by a few people that hatch rates haven’t been that great this season, so I’ve exceeded my low expectations.

There’s still a slight chance I’ll get more but I’m doubtful – the plug will be pulled on it this afternoon. I had a few concerns about the rate of humidity in the R-com King Suro in the last few days – condensation seemed to cling to the sides of the unit, and the rate of humidity exceeded 85% for quite a while after a few chicks hatched simultaneously. I ended up putting another incubator next to it and moving some of the chicks in there to dry to steady the rate in R2-D2.

The boys loved the how visible the hatching process was – in fact one declared ‘ I think it’s better than watching TV’ – very high praise from an 8 year old!

The other key interested party in the hatch has been the dog, Scruffy, who has been checking on the chicks regularly – he seems to get very worried when they’re chirping, although it may be possible it’s less about concern for their well-being, and more about figuring out how to get them out so he can ‘play’ with them
